Bakuman (Shounen) – Written by Ohba Tsugumi and Illustrated by Obata Takeshi – Rating: 8/10
Synopsis: Ever wondered about the story behind the manga? Had a thought for a glimpse into the lives of the mangakas themselves? Bakuman lays it out for all to see. This manga follows the lives of Mashiro Morikata, a 9th grade student whose late uncle was a mangaka, and Takagi Akito, also a 9th grader, who is always at the top of his class but has no interest in college or a regular job, as they encounter the ups and downs of being a professional mangaka: drafts, deadlines, rivals, the ever-important serialization, and of course the drive for an anime…
The story kicks off when Mashiro leaves a notebook containing a sketch of Azuki Miho, the girl he likes, at school to be found by Takagi. Mashiro refuses, thinking that Takagi’s dream is one that cannot be fulfilled. Takagi doesn’t give up, and discovers that the girl in the sketch, Azuki Miho, has a dream of being a voice actress and has already begun pursuing her ambition. He tricks Mashiro into going to Azuki’s house, and suddenly announces his dream to Azuki! Mashiro, encouraged, tells her that he will draw a manga with Takagi which will be granted an anime, in which she will voice the heroine. Caught in the moment, he asks Azuki to marry him if their dreams come true. She accepts – but if and only if their dreams both come true.
Mood/Artwork: Bakuman falls into the category of Slice-of-Life/Romance, although with some relatable encounters and totally hilarious side-characters it can almost as easily be said to be a comedy. It maintains a good balance of serious to light situations. The artwork is pleasing to the eye in my opinion. The lines are clean and sharp, the characters have no insane proportions, and one could say it suits a manga about manga.
Consensus: I recommend Bakuman to anyone interested in finding out about how manga is made, or anyone looking for a good ongoing manga to read.
