Mangaka: Hiro Mashima Title: Dead End of Despair Rating: 8.5/10
Synopsis: I knooow, I know! I’m never this late to update, but you will not believe the university drama (and some extra laziness). I’ll make it up to you guys with a super special review sometime within the next week (as long as school doesn’t go all apeshit on my ass). But moving right along!
This week we start off where we left off with Lluvia rising from the dead and preparing to put the smackdown on Meredy. Erza is telling her to calm down but Lluvia is way past the psycho mode and says with a scary, zombie-like face “Calm down?…” and goes on a Gray-sama/”I’ll never forgive this woman!” rant.
She launches a massive attack at Meredy (LLUVIA HYDRO CANNON!!! <— yay for Pokémon reference!), which sends the latter flying back. Lluvia keeps on delivering blow after heavy blow to the point where Erza-sama cannot believe that this was the same person she fought (and defeated) during the first test of the S-Class exams. Lluvia tells Erza to go ahead of her and look for Gray and Wendy. As Erza is leaving (yay for Erza undies flash!, upper right corner, page 8 ) Meredy tries to stop her saying “Number 4 must not escape”, but Lluvia just shuts her up with a huge water smackdown (which made me lol). Meredy tries to counter attack but Lluvia just stops her in her tracks with a water slicer.
We switch scenes where we see that Gray is still tracking Ultear and Zeref, before we switch again to see Azuma and RustyRose having a bromantic (see: brotherly romantic) chat. Rusty is totally dissing Fairy Tail, convinced there are no strong members there within. But Azuma gives him the best (and most truthful) warning of all time “I wouldn’t underestimate them…Fairy Tail…their weapons lay not in their magical power but in their incredible faith that they can transform and wield like blades…” woot! Azuma just gained 10 “kool” points. First time I’ve ever felt like I appreciated him, he seems to have some common sense. Anyway…We move back to Lluvia and Meredy’s showdown. Meredy’s being all philosophical about the irony that Gray could be subject to so much love (from Lluvia) and yet so much hate at the same time (from Meredy herself). Meredy decides to show Lluvia a “touch of heaven and boundless despair”. Meredy then uses her lost magic “Maguilty = Sense” to form a sensory link between Gray and Lluvia. (Read the chapter to find out the details!) It was funny how silly Lluvia was acting over the thought of being “one” with Gray. iLoled. However, when she (Lluvia) realised that Meredy was trying to hurt Gray through her (oh no she didn’t!), she went all bipolar and psycho and attacked Meredy even more forcefully than before (don’t mess with da woman’s man, dude. Learn!). Well, Meredy did learn…sorta. Quick to realise that Lluvia was gonna totally pwn her behind if she kept her normal tricks up, she READ THE CHAPTER!!! It really was a cheap move :\. Now Lluvia is in a daiii-pinchi (see: huge problem!)…her eyes widening in horror and despair!
Best Character: Lluvia! I loved, loved, LOVED her in this chapter. She was so sexy, so fierce, so epic, so awesome, so EVERYTHING. She really kicked some Meredious bootay (see: Meredy booty) in this chapter, and per usual, Hiro-chan did the battle scenes some epic justice. I wish I could’ve found an angry, fighting, sexy pic of her…unfortunately, I could only find a sexy pic:
Worst Character: Meredy. She’s SERIOUSLY going down in my bad, awful, horrible books of despair and torture. I can’t believe she DID that. OMMMGG. SUCH a BE-OTCH! I want Lluvia to cut her with the waterslicer of justice until she is nothing more that atomic matter.
Likes: Really great chapter. I am very pleased, Hiro-dai-sensei. The drama and raw emotion was right up there, I couldn’t take my eyes away. Like I said, the battle scenes were marvelously done, very much up to Hiro-chan’s standards. Lluvia, really kicked ass and you could see the ass kicking fly off the page. Not nearly as much crammed into this chapter. In fact, nothing was crammed at all. So I really appreciated that I had the leisure time to just enjoy the battle for what it was and completely immerse myself in it without having to be jumping around like a bouncing ball. Also! The artwork was more off the chain than usual (to me at least). The character’s expressions, well, mostly Lluvia and Meredy’s expressions really did it for me, especially on the last page. Moreover (last thing I swear), the humour was played out and added in very well. It didn’t seem forced, or awkward or out of place. Everything just really fit in and came together amazingly well. I really enjoyed this chapter.
Dislikes: Nothing to really complain about. As perfect as a chapter gets, more or less. 😄
More Chapter Ratings:
§eraph: 8.5/10 – Another awesome chapter. I love how the plot flows from one interesting development to another. Juvia was h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s when she found out about the “connnection….” It’s amazing how she can switch from being silly to being cold and formidable so quickly. Also, the rain as a recurring background motif is always so powerful. Right now, Fairy Tail, as a mainstream manga, is number 1 for me. Hiro Mashima is amazing…
§tiggles: 8.5/10 – Great chapter. Lots of action with the fight, and plenty of drama mixed in with the situation Lluvia’s been put in. Poor Gray. lol
Random Rant Time: Well, more like a random pet peeve. I know everyone’s been calling her Juvia/Jubia but I REFUSE to do it. I don’t care if you do it but I won’t. I just won’t. Her name is LLUVIA, as in Spanish for “Rain”, which makes sense when you think about it. And before you say “but they pronounce the it with a ‘J'”. In Latin American countries, especially they pronounce double “l” as “j”. Also, in Spanish they don’t distinguish between “v” and “b” pronunciation wise. So…yah. I accept and will not argue with your right to call her Juvia/Jubia (even though it kinda irks me as a purist…I still resisted the urge to change §eraph’s spelling…I’m a good person), as long as I can call her Lluvia. Fair? I know, I know, that a lot of translators spell her name “Juvia” and maybe that’s how it’s written in Japanese, but all I’m saying…I don’t think just because you have to adapt something to a language means that the word itself/meaning changes. You might have to change your name to suit Japanese spelling…that doesn’t mean you’ll be Riri, instead of Lily, now does it? That’s all I shall say on this matter. Controversially though, I’m not sure about Meredy’s name…’cause sometimes I swear it’s Melody. Do you guys know anything about that? If you do tell me below, cause I am all up for correcting my mistakes.
P.S. Lluvia’s cover page = SEXY! I wouldn’t mind joining her for that bath. I want her to bathe me in kindness. fufufuufufufu. (betcha thought only Erza-sama could move me…well think again!)
