Mangaka: Hiro Mashima Title: Tear of Love and Life Rating: 8.5/10
Synopsis: University must…BURN. Finals are going to be the death of me -_-. Late release AGAIN. Anyhoo…
We continue from where we left off last week with Meredy being an ass and revealing to Lluvia that she has connected not only Lluvia’s and Gray’s senses but her own senses to them as well. This means, that irregardless of who dies, they will all inevitably fall. Of course, this causes Lluvia to sink into despair. Meredy, being the psychotic bitch that she is (little wonder, now I see the relation between her and Ultear), decides that things being as they are, there is no longer any reason to fight (coward) and says she’ll end it all by killing herself, and moves to cut off her own head. Of course, Lluvia won’t let this happen and (apologizing to Gray) with a huge blow to her leg (I think she actually broke it, kinda), causes Meredy to go down. Meredy is astonished by her determination and tells her to just give up, they all are going to die. Lluvia, being Lluvia insists to Meredy that there was another option…they can all live. Meredy scoffs at the notion and screams “HOW INCREDIBLY CHILDISH!” (Personally, I agree Meredy. I’d prefer if you died -_- too bad you have Gray and Lluvia linked to you.) They continue to scuffle and we switch scenes to a flashback of Meredy’s past and how she met Ultear.
We learn that Ultear spared her life when they were supposed to exterminate everyone (mostly because Ultear actually had feelings and was feeling all nostalgic. Apparently Meredy reminded her of herself and she had huge magical power so…she was allowed to live.) We also learn that Meredy thought of Ultear as a mother (and actually looks really cute when she smiles and isn’t being psychotic) although Ultear (with a surprisingly cute smile as well) says that she doesn’t need a big kid like Meredy. We make a sudden switch back to the fight where somehow a crying Lluvia ends up hugging Meredy tightly. Needless to say, Meredy is shocked. Through the link, Lluvia ends up feeling her emotions and seeing her past. Lluvia then ends up giving this long, dramatic, mushy, heartfelt speech (i’m just hating, I actually loved it, SOOOO epic) basically saying, “I live for the ones that I love!! You’ve got to, too!!! If you have love in your life, then you must keep on living!!!!” Because of Lluvia’s torrent of massive emotions, Meredy ends up crying as well, returning to the cute Meredy (she really is cute when she shows emotion…so cute I might forgive her…MAYBE). In the end, completely exhausted emotionally, mentally and physically, the two collapse and Maguilty=Sense wears off.
There is a final scene switch back to Gray’s location (poor thing, he’s still trying to figure out what happened to him). He jumps when he sees Ultear standing ominously and suspiciously behind him. She introduces herself with a smile and then tells Gray that she is…READ THE CHAPTER (that lying bitch).
Best Character: LLuvia. Another awesome chapter for this lady, I just can’t get enough of her. Not only did she kick ass, she totally mentally/emotionally f***ed the opponent…and all in a nice way! How many people do you know that can accomplish that? I mean, part of me wishes she just kicked Meredy’s ass once and for all BUT that would’ve been problematic, I know, and probs and over kill. One chapter of ass-handing was enough for Meredy I admit. This just felt right, I was just being a hater because Meredy dared to mess with my lovely couple.
Worst Character: Ultear. I agree with §eraph. Gray better not trust that devil. Granted, he’ll have it the hardest, because he doesn’t know of Ultear’s treachery nor her psychopathic capabilities. Moreover, she looks like Ul so….Gray’s gonna have a really hard time with this one.
Likes: Lluvia being so epicly kickass and nice at the same time. Meredy actually having a heart and being all cute (I might seriously forgive her). Again, really awesome fighting. Also, the emotion pouring out of the page, though sappy was epic. The way Hiro-chan drew the characters’ faces *sigh* just beautiful. Really another brilliantly perfect chapter.
Dislikes: Ultear being a lying bitch. -_-. She. MUST. DIE!
More Chapter Ratings:
§eraph: 8.5/10 – A very engrossing and unpredictable chapter. When I read it I was completely unaware of everything else around me. Hiro Mashima really does a great job when it comes to conveying his characters’ emotions. After all of this drama there better be some sort of development between Gray and Lluvia (<- she needs to calm down with the psycho love though) Also, note to self: Never. Trust. Ultear 😐
§tiggles: 7/10 – Not a bad chapter, but that whole ‘transferring emotions’ thing seemed kinda convenient. Just saying.
Random Rant Time: Today I feel it is appropriate to address my epic hatred toward Ultear. I feel like it must be psychoanalyzed. When I first met her, as a character. I seriously thought I’d love her and she’d be one of my favourite characters. She’s everything I love in an evil, female villain. Scary, deceptive, kick-ass-you-won’t-believe-how-powerful powerful, deceptive, extremely intelligent, deceptive, an extremely good liar, deceptive, also a great actress, deceptive (I feel like I just said the same thing 100 times, but it’s true, that woman can lie through her teeth). So yeah, I really, really liked her, at the very least I found her to be an interesting character. She amused me, and I loved watching her mind games. It also didn’t hurt that she was hot. And then the psycho came in, and I felt like a dutiful boyfriend who was tricked into marrying a psycho girlfriend because she faked a pregnancy and then ended up stealing someone else’s baby to cover up her gone-too-far lies, because she was crazy and over-controlling and was afraid I’d leave her if she didn’t rope me in……….
……..you know, the stalker type that’d hunt you down and steal your underwear and take secret naked pictures of you through your window. And, as we all know, that’s just wrong. Not the way to get a person to stay. Not the way to show someone you love ’em. I’m just sayin’. I mean, this woman just flipped the frickin’ script on me. She got way too crazy, way too uncool. I like my cool, manipulative, female villains. When you start acting all batty, losing your coolness and just acting…lame, is when I’m off your ship. And it wasn’t even a cool crazy, like say…Zancrow…or a more fitting example, Medusa (Soul Eater). I need something dark, deep and fearful. Not something annoying and just…lame. I was so disappointed, SO hurt because she had SO much potential. I mean, Ul was her mother and personally I LOOOOVE Ul. I seriously want her to come back somehow. Not sure how or where, but if Lisanna did it, I’m sure Ul can manage to work something out for me. So yeah, when you see the apple falling so far from the tree it’s just like -_-, really? So much power and epicness and you just had to ruin it Ultear. **sigh**. But who knows, maybe you too will eventually change and do something epic to make me change my mind. Granted, it may cost you a bit for all the trouble you’ve caused to my fairies and all the disappointment you’ve caused me.
However, I reiterate, and I can’t deny. Woman is hot, smart, sexy and badass. If she’d JUST lose that psychoness…improve/evolve the state of her psychoness, she’d be the perfect villain. She pretty much already is.
I dunno, what do you think about Ultear? Sometimes I feel like my hatred is so unfounded but I really can’t help it.
