Noblesse (Manhwa) Story: Son Jae Ho Art: Lee Gwang Su Rating: 8.5/10
Synopsis: Noblesse is an engrossing tale of action, suspense, mystique and comedy. It revolves around the life of Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, a powerful and noble vampire, who had been asleep for eight hundred and twenty years. Completely ignorant of the technologically advanced 21st century, he sets out into the bustling city of South Korea and notices how differently the humans are dressed. He changes his attire to match that of a few high school students, follows them and unintentionally ends up enrolling at Ye Ran High. It is there that he meets his loyal servant and ally, Frankenstein, and where he also befriends a few of the students. The vampire and the young students soon become inseparable but as time quickly passes, they stumble upon a terrifying secret in the shape of a dangerous creature and they have no choice but to defend themselves. As the story progresses they soon encounter more enemies, each more powerful and terrifying than the last who are all connected to an obscure and dangerous organization which poses a great threat to mankind.
Mood: Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, also known as Rai, is a very quiet and nonchalant individual but unexpectedly, he is also the manhwa’s main source of comic relief. The pervading mood is not restricted to comedy. There are many instances when the tone becomes very serious. Rai’s fighting abilities will definitely leave you open mouthed and wide eyed. His loyal servant, Frankenstein, is usually incandescently happy but when the time calls for it he becomes the manhwa’s sadistic but awesome badass.
Artwork: Lee Gwang Su is a very talented and skilled artist whose work in Noblesse will have anyone swooning (or simply nodding in approval). A great amount of detail goes into the characters’ general appearance (especially their clothes, hair and build). This makes up for the backgrounds which are often left out. Like many other Korean manhwa, the artwork differs a great deal from Japanese manga. This in itself makes Noblesse (which is actually a webcomic) very unique from your typical reads (which I’m sure, are mainly Japanese manga). The artwork improves tremendously as the story progresses. Also, the entire manhwa is in colour. What more could you want? I hate the one/two panel per page format though. That irks me. I’ll never get used to that.
Consensus: This manhwa transcends your typical action packed shounen comic. It is one that greatly exceeded my expectations and one that forced me to stay up at ridiculously early hours in the morning. I am in love with Principal Frankenstein. So. Hopelessly. In. Love. Rai and the student Han Shin Woo have amazing martial arts skills and insane powers respectively. As for the male readers, do not let your heart be troubled. The females in Noblesse are super strong and will leave you breathless and panting. The plot and characterization are excellent. This manhwa is guaranteed to capture the interest of adults and teenagers alike.
This is not your typical vampire story so do not expect a lot of blood sucking/stake stabbing drama. The fighting scenes are top notch. I cannot imagine anyone who would not like this manhwa. I started reading it out of sheer curiosity and I was simply amazed by how interesting it was. Noblesse is definitely one of my favourites. If you like The Breaker or Soul Eater you will DEFINITELY love this.
More Manga Ratings:
mu§e: 8/10 “Really slow at the beginning, but it picks up astonishingly well when you hit the right parts and from then on it’s smooth sailing. Ridiculously hilarious, lots of drama and high emotion. I pretty much worship it. Rai = Sex on legs. I want him. Now. I definitely recommend that you read this. You won’t regret it in the least. It’s one of the few Korean manhwa that I actually really like and enjoy. You really only just have to plow through like the first 4 chapters or so 😀 And adjust to the format a bit. Remember kiddies, read left to right this time!”
