Mangaka: Hiro Mashima Title: What a Guild Rating: 8.5/10
Synopsis: We continue with Gerard sitting and whispering Erza’s name in his Council cell. Two of those weird frog/toad/lizard dudes start an argument because one of ’em accidentally called Gerard “Sieglein-sama” and the other started on some weird, sadistic rampage torturing Gerard who doesn’t seem to care and just whispers again “Erza, don’t lose.” We switch back to Erza and Azuma’s fight where Erza is sprawled sexily across Tenrou tree but then starts to move. Azuma is taken aback that she can move after being hit with all the magic of Tenrou Island (that is Erza-sama. Moreover, Tenrou Island magic was originally Fairy Tail magic, you can’t expect it to hurt one of its members that badly do you?) Anyway, Erza-sama shows a deliciously angry, wounded, “imma-kill-this-bitch” face while she tries to figure out if she had actually heard Gerard’s voice. She shakes off the feeling as she once more moves forward to protect her guild. More epic battle fighting ensues as they exchange blows. Azuma, like the freak he is, is totally getting off on Erza’s anger and killing intent -_-. And he once more strikes her with all the magic from the island. As Erza prepares to accept her defeat (yeah, right), she sees Natsu appear in front of her, chiding her, then she sees everyone else in the guild (who is on the island) as well. She charges forward while apologizing, a giant light of power gathering behind her with the images of her nakama in it as she remembers “it’s not that I’m protecting everyone, I’m the one who has always been protected.” With her nakama and all the magic of Tenrou Island now protecting her, Erza slashes through Azuma for the final time…READ CHAPTER FOR EPIC DETAILS!
Likes: Quite a step up from last week’s charade. I’m quite pleased (and no, this isn’t because Erza won, I insist). This chapter seemed a lot more detailed and a lot less rushed to me. It felt more natural. the emotions were up to notch, especially with Erza having her mini flashbacks about Gerard (so cute) and her visions of the guild (doubly cute). Also, Erza’s expressions throughout this entire chapter just gave me the chills. I don’t know how Hiro draws her but I have to learn the method. I was also pleased that Hiro-chan stepped away from the tentacle porn this week. And I must admit, Azuma’s psychosis was quite enjoyable, as usual. He reminds me a lot of Rigardo the Silver-eyed Lion King (Claymore)…you know in the way that despite he was literally being destroyed he was just so awed by/throughly enjoyed Clare’s speedy development and ability to defeat him. (Claymore readers/watchers would know what I’m talking about).
Dislikes: Hmmm, not much to complain about. Well, it’s not really a dislike per se, but the whole 4 pages spent on Gerard seemed kinda random to me. I mean they worked really well, but I was just wondering if 4 pages was really necessary. What I really didn’t like was that weird toad/frog/lizard dude being all cocky and torturing him. That seemed a bit out of place and just…weird. I mean, I liked it, it was just a kinda “um…okay?” moment. Y’know? Also, I hate to say it, but this chapter was terrifyingly predictable. We all saw it coming and you know it. So although I was pleased, I wasn’t surprised. Still though, Hiro-chan did a great job making it as exciting as possible even though we all knew what was going to happen.
More Chapter Ratings:
§eraph: 8.5/10 “Good chapter. Climaxes such as this are hard to pull off and even though it was a bit predictable, Mashima still did a decent job with making it an intense, emotional and on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of chapter. I loved Azuma’s reaction when Erza did the whole get-back-up-after-fatal-blow-and-win thing. Splendid indeed.”
je§ter: 8.5/10 “Pretty good chapter…kinda cheesy with the whole sudden Gerard gives me strength bit, but that’s okay…I like me some cheese…plentiful and slightly burnt to bring out the flavour. The chapter did just that I think, properly toasting the proverbial sandwich with Azuma’s whole respect of his opponent stuff; he didn’t go off screaming “THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!” (or similar) like some other epically cool villains-turned-bitches (sorry Dr. §trangelove, this is a DIRECT reference to Aizen Sousuke).
Random Rant Time: Erza-sama was awesome per usual. I worship her. The usual. One of the things I absolutely LOVE about her is that Hiro makes her so…HUMAN. I mean, you think of Erza and you think of someone tough, irreproachable, unapproachable…inhuman almost. But then you learn about her backstories, her weaknesses and her faults. You see her tears, her scars and all her vulnerabilities and how she depends on the guild, just like everyone else and your heart just…ugh. I wanna squeeze her. We see a lot of those vulnerabilities and a lot her strength as well in this chapter. She’s also stupidly funny and just plain ridiculous especially with her little girly quirks (like the Seduction Armour or that time when she was pretending to be a maid) or when she takes an obsessive interest in something like she did with the acting that one time, her general level of seriousness for even the smallest things. And these little things you learn about her certainly don’t make her weak it just makes her all the more lovable, all the more REAL.
I also love her and her little Gerard drama. <3. At first I thought I must have Natsu and Erza, since Lisanna was dead, but I actually really like Gerard and since Lisanna is back it works out perfectly! Maybe in another Random Rant Time I’ll explore that relationship. Anyway, the pic I’m about to attach I love for two reasons. 1) It is so like the great Erza-sama and she is gorgeous 2) It reminds me a lot of Saber (Fate/Stay Night), the pose especially and Saber is one of my all time favourite heroines. In fact, put Erza and Saber in the same room with me and I will probably turn stupid from joy 😀
