Mangaka: Hiro Mashima Title: Gray vs. Ultear Rating: 8.5/10
Synopsis: The punch that made me lol continues right into this chapter which makes it even MORE epic, if I do say so myself (hahahahaha, her face have to turn inside out!). Unfortunately however, she’s fine and tells Meredy to go ahead with Zeref to the escape point. Gray shouts for Lluvia to snap out of it. Responding purely to Gray’s voice with heart filled eyes, Lluvia gets up and starts to run after Meredy only to realise that her leg is effed from the punch she gave it earlier when she was fighting Meredy. So…she begins to crawl in this creepy, perverted spider-like way that is totally hilarious. Anyway, back to the real fight….
Ultear and Gray began to tango. Ultear is pummeling Gray, and, horror of horrors, whenever Gray tries to use his ice magic, Ultear would use her Arc of Time to force his ice into the future and make it evaporate. In short, Gray couldn’t attack her or injure at ALL. :o. Apparently, Ultear honed this type of magic so she’d be able to kill her mother (these psycho characters, I tell you). Gray has a flashback about Ur crying and hugging little baby girl clothes (aka Ultear’s old clothes) and gets super pissed, of course, but still, there is nothing he can do against the Arc of Time with his ice and he’s still getting beaten up. However, he still tries to convince Ultear that her mother loved her. Ultear scoffs at him. Gray insists that he will beat Ultear with Ur’s ice magic while Ultear basically laughs at him. Then, to everyone’s surprise, Gray takes his own ice and slashes himself 😐 and, in the same words Ur told him like 10 years ago, he says to Ultear, “Your darkness, I will seal it.” (the look on his face gives me chills!) He then launches an attack. Ultear prepares to move forward the time of the ice but this time it didn’t work! Turns out that Gray….READ CHAPTER FOR DETAILS!!! In one epic fell swoop, Gray takes down Ultear. At that point, Ultear had her own mini flashback and rises once more taking a very peculiar, but familiar stance. With a completely demented resolve to not lose, she uses Ice Make 😐 the SAME exact type as Ur’s, which leaves Gray completely stunned.
Likes: Wow, what’s there to NOT like? Another awesome chapter by Hiro-chan. Everything was really nice and neat. The battle scenes were clean, epic and easy to follow just how we like ’em. This one didn’t feel rushed at all, it was well paced and the little twist thrown in at the end just made it the best shit ever. The passion he carves into his character’s faces, even Ultear’s this time gave me the shivers. Hiro-chan really knows how to find the emotion inside of you when you’re reading his stuff and this one really made you feel like you were just watching this entire battle unfold in person. It was seriously intense. I also enjoyed that Lluvia’s insane moment. She was a bit scary for a moment 😐 but you know how she gets when it comes to “Gray-sama” **sigh** Oh Lluvia, don’t worry. I too believe we’ll have sexy water-ice babies one day.
Dislikes: Not much to complain about. Just waiting to see what happens at the climax point next week :|. Should be a really interesting, tear jerking chapter by the looks of it. We all know Ur is a touchy subject. I really hope we find out why Ultear hates her so much…Because I’m really interested in what warrants such insane hatred AND what kinda thing could possibly make your child turn so -_-
More Chapter Ratings:
§eraph: 8.5/10 – Lluvia is crazy! In a good way. The fight scenes were good, I didn’t have to read it over as a result of being confused by a superfluity of details. The fight scenes were great and easy enough to follow/understand. I did read it over because it made up for the other weekly crap (most of them, not all) that I read. Drama in FT is hardly ever cheesy. Flowers? Ultear? Funny. At least they have thorns right? I was disappointed in that last page with Gray and Ultear. Why? Because the chapter was done, duh.”
Random Rant Time: I know she didn’t have much presence in the manga, granted, she had more presence than a lot of backstory characters, second probably only to Gerard (when I say backstory characters I mean characters that have a lot to do with the main characters’ pasts). Anyway, I really did love Ur, as much as I didn’t know about her. She just seemed like a really fun, potentially amazing character. I was disappointed and heartbroken that she died :\. She’d have been an awesome addition to Fairy Tail.
