Mangaka: Hiro Mashima Title: The Power of “Life” Rating: 7/10
Synopsis: Lluvia is still creepily chasing Meredy, as we go through a page of panels showing the position and state of the aforementioned, Erza, Gildarts and Natsu. We then get back to the nitty-gritty of it all which is Gray’s fight against Ultear, where Gray is being blown away by Ultear’s shocking Rosen Corone. More fighting and all of that ensues and Ultear begins to go down memory lane and we learn the truth about her “hatred” for Ul and her obsession with Zeref… After some rolling about they fall into the sea continuing to fight, and then Ultear finally begins to hear voices (last stage of insanity). On a real though, apparently the sea they had fallen into contained Ul’s remains (remember they had melted and mixed with the ocean?), and consequently her memories (as she is technically still alive). We then sea Ul’s memories and the truth of what really happened, which in turn shows Ultear her misconceptions about her mother. With Ultear shaken and shocked (READ FOR SOBBY DETAILS), Gray unleashes a final move, trapping Ultear. With her incapacitated, Gray tells her a final story about herself that Ul had told him only once. Blah blah blah, more sob stories. Anyway, Gray begins to walk off with the intent of facing Hades. Ultear tells him it’s hopeless for him. Gray responds that he knows but then again, he had no intention of doing it without his nakama.
Likes: Solid chapter in its own right but…it just lacked a lot of the fire that I was hoping for. You know? But we’ll get back to that. As for likes…The backstories were touching (even if a bit cheesy and sobby). We kinda build up some understanding and compassion toward Ultear…and that’s cute and everything but I still don’t like the bitch -_-. She could’ve been a much better villain that she was. Meh…
Dislikes: Disappointing battle scenes. I really expected for fire, more rage….especially on Gray’s part, considering how important Ul was to him. I also expected more from Ultear…I mean she’s supposed to be fairly strong right? And yet, Gray beat her sooooo sooo easily. Too easily. Now don’t get me wrong. I love Gray and I worship Fairy Tail. These are things you should already know given my past behaviour. But that was just way too easy. There needed to be more blood shed, more epic moves pulled out from no where, more blood boiling, hair raising emotion. I got none of that from this chapter. Granted, that’s probably because it was more memory based and thus called for a more reminiscent mood…but still…seriously? Too much. Even if Hiro-chan wanted to play those cards he needed to balance them. There was too much drama…especially considering we’re in the middle of a fight. :S. I dunno, I was fairly disappointed, but again, nonetheless, a very solid chapter.

§eraph: 7.5/10 – So Mashima-sensei went through aaaaaalll that trouble to make us HATE Ultear and now he wants us to feel sorry for her?? NO! Not Happening dude. Ugh. Is she gonna join the freaking Guild next? What the hell. Chups. Anyway, the Guild does it again! Gray defies all odds and manages to defeat THE EVIL ONE and moves on to even more dangerous waters. Can someone from the goodside die? Must good always conquer evil in the shounen world despite all odds? -_-
Random Rant Time: Just a quick reply to §eraph’s comment…to be honest, I’m not sure if I’d be able to part with anyone from the guild…I love them all too much. But it is a legitimate question. Losing someone is a very important part of developing characters and all that other good stuff. **sigh** All I’m saying is as long as they don’t kill Erza-sama, I’m good. I dunno, do you think they need to lose one of them? And if so, who would you want to see go?
§eraph: LUCY!! lol! Okay I really don’t know. I love everyone in the Guild too *sigh* But maybe….Lucy? Sure she brought everyone closer together but I think her death would give Erza, Gray and Natsu more drive to improve themselves in order to obliterate, freeze and incinerate every evil thing in existence. Maybe her death would REALLY fire up Natsu and help him complete/perfect all that dragon slayer stuff. More DORAGON POWA!! IGNEEEEEL!!!
